Good morning,
Today starts our Quiet Time Encouragement & Accountability emphasis! Each morning, after I finish my quiet time, I will post a brief video to help you and encourage you in your own quiet times. My goal is to have these posted no later than 5:30 each morning. The way it will work is that I'll ask you to read a certain New Testament chapter and a certain chapter in the book of Proverbs. As you read through the chapter, write down the things you feel like the Lord is showing you today. I will do the same thing.
Once you are finished reading and taking notes, play the video and I will show you some of the things that especially stood out to me.
If you would like me to help you with some daily accountability, just send me an email at mymornings@fbcho.com at the end of your quiet time and video time each morning. I'll pray for you as I receive your emails and try to send out some encouragement from time to time.
Tomorrow things will begin in earnest, but today I have posted an introductory video explaining how I do my quiet times. I hope this helps you.

12:9 (NLT) Each time he said,“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

Lord, I pray for my church. I pray that you will keep her pure and holy. I pray that we will always be pleasing to you. Lord show us where we fall short and give us the courage and desire to change.

Things are not always as they appear. We must be very discerning.

Lord I pray that my church can be a model church in its giving to other churches and to missions.

9:8 (NLT) And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.
Thank you Lord for your faithfulness in caring for those who give.

Troubles and poverty do not preclude joy and generosity.

More than they could afford meant they made sacrifices to give.

7:1 (NLT) Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.
This should be the goal and priority of every believer. We should never be satisfied as long as there is sin in our lives needing cleansing.

7:6 (NLT) But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.
Thank you Lord for sending encouragement to me when things are hard.

7:8-9 (NLT) I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while. 9 Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.
I should never be sorry for preaching the Word. I should never apologize for preaching the Word.

Sometimes a preacher has to bring bad news and stern warnings. Sometimes it is just necessary.

7:10 (NLT) For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
You can distinguish between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow by the results. Godly sorrow always leads to a change (repentance).

I must face hardships in ministry with patience no matter the severity of the hardships.

6:8 (NLT) We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors.
I must remember that I am here to please God not man. I must serve with grace and consistency regardless of the thoughts or actions of others.

6:14-15 (NLT) Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

Thank you Lord for the promise of eternal life and of a new body.

5:4 (NLT) While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.
God has given us a strong desire for our eventual bodies and our eventual home. We are strangers in this world.

5:16 (NLT) So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!
Lord, help me to stop evaluating other in this manner.

I must always think of myself and carry myself as an ambassador of Christ.

4:2 (NLT) We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods. We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.
My ministry and service needs to be always characterized by this verse. No tricks, no distortions, no hidden agendas, nothing underhanded. Just honesty and integrity.

4:6 (NKJ) For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Thank you Lord for shining the light of the knowledge of Christ into my heart.

4:7 (NLT) We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.
Lord, help me to always remember that my ministry and service are not of me, for me, or about me. The focus of my ministry should be on you in every way.

3:5-6 (NLT) It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. 6 He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.
It is God who enables a person to minister. The qualification and the sufficiency come from Him!

3:14 (NLT) But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.
Thank you Lord that you have removed the veil. Thank you for giving the Holy Spirit to help me to better understand Scripture.

The purpose of all church discipline and even personal opposition to a believer is to bring reconciliation. Opposition and discipline should never be an end but only a means to an end.

2:10-11 (NLT) When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, 11 so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.
When we refuse to forgive someone who had done wrong in church or has hurt us, then we have been outsmarted by Satan.

2:12 (NLT) When I came to the city of Troas to preach the Good News of Christ, the Lord opened a door of opportunity for me.
Thank you Lord for the open door of opportunity you have blessed me with.

Thank you Lord that you are always willing to lead and guide when I am willing to follow and obey.

I must always be mindful of the motives of my service and remember that my Lord is watching me.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11 -- Friday, 8/29
OK. We are back on track this morning.
Before we look at this morning's devotion, let me give you a challenge. While I usually focus on only a chapter or two each morning in my Quiet Time, it is important to read larger chunks of the Bible as well. Yesterday I read 1 Samuel. I am going to try before this three day weekend is over to get from there through the end of 2 Chronicles. Ordinarily I don't read near this much in such short time, but I want to push myself this weekend. Up to the challenge? Try reading 1 Samuel on Saturday and 2 Samuel on Sunday. Read from an easy to read Bible like the NLT and you will really love doing this.
Let's get started...
I read less than a chapter today because these first verses gave me so much stuff to pray for. I try to be careful to slow down in Scripture when there is so much more to think and pray about.
So today, read 2 Corinthians 1:1-11 on your own at least one time. As you read, make notes in a notebook or in the margins of your Bible. Record all of the insights God gives you. Don't read my remarks until you have first done this yourself.

1:4 (NLT) He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
Thank you Lord that in all difficulty I can turn to you and find comfort and peace.

When we face very hard times we must lean completely on God. At times like that we should look for ways that we are leaning upon ourselves and change those things so that we may lean entirely on Him.

1:10 (NLT) And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.
Thank you Lord for the times you have rescued me or protected me in difficulty!

1:11 (NLT) And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
Prayer for others really works! I need to spend more time praying for others.
